slave router and BT hub
Jul 25th, 2010 at 10:26pm

I have just got my broadband with BT but my daughters room is so far away that the signal is poor. Can I use my old netgear dgn1000 modem upstairs as a slave to the BT hub to boost the signal. I also want the BT hub and netgrear  to be wireless.
Also if I can do this is there an idiots guide to help ?

I am guessing that if you have just joined you have the V2 hub (The black one). If so then you can not join them via wireless as the hub does not support WDS, just googling quickly and it appears the DGN1000 also does not support WDS.

You can only extend and join them via homeplugs or cat5 cable.

Quick idiots guide from slow idiot...

Find out how to get into the Netgear using ethernet and...
- ensure wireless encryption is set to WPA or better
- disable firewall
- disable DHCP
- change it's home IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.175 and save settings.
- connect ethernet to ethernet, preferably with a long ethernet cable from ebay. or as FS says Home-plugs (if you have the cash spare!)
- reboot Home hub then reboot Netgear. If that does not connecft them, try it the other way round.
- remove any previous Netgear wireless connections from the PC, reboot PC,  and reconnect by wireless to Netgear

If you are still stuck, I bought an Edimax Wireless 300M range extender (Model EW-7416APn-V2) and followed the instructions to set it up and it solved the same problem for me.
