Failed PC connection
Jan 12th, 2010 at 3:32pm

I own a Psion REVO series 5, which had been working well last week and was fully charged. Today, I could not switch on at all – though when in the cradle and connected to the charger, both the red and green indicator lit. In desperation, I decided to do a soft reset. I was then able to switch on and Today showed the battery at 88%.
When looking at the REVO, it seems that, despite my having only done a soft reset, it had done a rather harder reset! The date and time had reverted to 2000 etc. After resetting the time, I found that none of my files appeared to be present, though it tells me that 12% of memory is being used.
The link indicates that it is active and my PC taskbar shows the usual signal indicating connected to a Psion and the time appears to be in sync with the PC. However, My Psion icon tells me “Not Connected”
I had a rather important data file set up on the REVO, but am not able to access it. On the PC the Psion section appears to have a copy of this file called tmp0003 and I had also backed it up to a Microsoft Access file.
I would VERY much appreciate help, firstly to be able to connect my REVO to my PC again and advice as to how I can copy my backed up file from PC to REVO.
Many thanks for any advice! Peter

The symptons you're describing would indicate that the Revo has lost all power - as the memory requires power, that's why your data's gone. This could indicate that your battery is losing the ability to hold a full charge.

As regards connectivity, if your machine has lost all power, it's now back to factory defaults. You will need to make sure the Link is turned on, set to Cable, and the baud rate on Revo and PC are set to the same value (this may have been reset when you lost power). Make sure the date and region settings are correct. If you're still having problems, see http://www.filesaveas.com/psionfaq.html#psiwin

Firstly, many thanks for your rapid reply - ADMIN.
I am a little surprised that you think the battery is faulty, when after the reset it showed 88% and has now risen to 100%. In the summer, whilst on vacation, the REVO was left at home and on return the battery showed 13% and after charging, worked perfectly. Memory usage is reporting to be 13% - is that likely to be the system, or does it indicate some files to be present?
I am still unable to establish a connection with the PC. I have even removed the physical connector and replaced it, in case it was not sitting fully - though this is unlikely because the time is synced with the PC correctly. I have changed the BAUD rate up and down on both the REVO and the PC, changed the order of the COM ports and confirmed that there is no conflict.
What further advice can you suggest?  Would a hard reset be worth trying? If I have lost all the files on the REVO and establsih a PC connection, I should be able to restore the files backed up to the PC.
I now have a netbook - so could decide to use that , but am loathe to discard the convenience of the REVO which appears OK in all other respects.

UPDATE:
Following a hard reset, the connection started instantly! Luckily, I had a backup from a few weeks ago - and a restore preceded by a format has been successful. Apart from losing entries made in the last few weeks - I am back in business.
I am, however, grateful for having the backup of this forum.
