vista laptop gets limited access message
Oct 27th, 2009 at 11:25am

newbie here and confused!
new toshiba vista laptop was able to access bt home hub1 via wireless for past few weeks , but now gets a message about that wireless link having " limited access" but cant connect to it at all. vista desktop is connected via cable to homehub and no probs
Bt Home hub 1 settings have not been changed/touched. have tried deleting link on laptop and setting it up again from fresh but still have same prob. have also unplugged bt home hub and replugged it in but same result. just before this all happeend did take laptop back to parents house and used their wireless access but not aware of having changed any settings on laptop - and am definitely trying to access the right wireless connection at home. have tried to access bt homehub with a different laptop (xp) and that works fine - therefore must be the vista laptop(??)
grateful for any advice!

Yes, I have the same problem with a Vista laptop and hub V 1.5.  I think its Vista.  The solution seems to be to restart the hub (not the full reset by holding in the wireless association button, although that would probably work too, but the restart).  Eventually, it connects.

Also try deleting not only the wireless setup for your hub but all others that have been created by being elsewhere as well, in Vista and start from fresh.

Have you used the BT cd at all?  If so delete (uninstall) everything from it.  You don't need any of it.

Vista really is rubbish.  Lets hope Win 7 turns out to be better.

I have a similar problem with vista on my laptop and a netgear router. I have found by experimenting the easiest way to re-establish the link is to connect via ethernet, turn off the wireless broadcast, apply, turn on the wireless broadcast, apply. Disconnect ethernet and Roberts your dads brother I have my wireless connection.
Not sure if this would work with a BT hub. Perhaps worth a try.

F, How long does the solution last for?  Also a bit of a palaver if you have other things happily connected via wireless at the time.

The frequency of this problem is intermittent. Sometimes it will be weeks with no dropouts and other times it can be two days on the trot.
I agree you do loose other wireless devices but that would also happen with a hub restart.
Interestingly I have recently bought a new vista laptop for the youngest daughter and she does not lose connection when I do, nor do the xp machines in the house. This would suggest it is not the router but just my vista laptop. It could be the wireless card - Atheros. I have tried latest drivers, rolling back, all with no effect.

Exactly the same here, Vista lappy 'loses it', everything else is fine.

Once I noticed that the hub reset itself during one of these episodes.

The same Vista laptop sometimes also has difficulty communicating properly with a wireless printer.

Why the heck would it suggest that??? We all know Vista sucks big time but surely the blaim for this little "hitch" should be laid where it actually belongs, ie BT Home Hub? My Vista laptop works everywhere in the world (including Kabul, Afghanistan fer chrissakes!) - no questions asked. The only place I need to do something TO A ROUTER to get it working is home, with BT Home Hub.   Angry

Welcome to the site Lynxair, glad to see you just flown in.
In response to your post had you read my post above you would have seen that I use a Netgear router and not  a BT hub.

my bad, I guess what I should have quoted was Bramshot's "I think it's Vista". And it's sorta true but it's Vista + BT HH (OK, you can now add in your netgear stuff too).

My point remains that my brand new Vista-running XPS M1530 refused to connect to my home BT HH out of the box (untill I hit "restart" button on the said box), and nowhere else I seem to have the problem (and I have been around, please believe me).

I've never had any problems with any XP based equipoment which leads me to believe that BT never bothered to do extensive Vista testing and their BT Home Hub is not strictly speaking, compatible with this operating system. Of which BT pretend to never have heard at all...

Agree with you on the connectivity issues with the hub, one of the main problems reported on this site.

Back to the issue from the OP. Last night my vista laptop failed to connect on boot up, while everything in the house was connected. Including another vista laptop and several xp laptops. This was after at least 3 weeks with no problem.
This time rather than the normal fix of enabling/disabling wireless on the router I tried to let windows fix the problem. It tried then told me to reboot the router!!. Didn`t do that.
Network manager was showing full signal strength from the router but no internet connection.
I could see full signal strength using Inssider.
I could not log into the router or ping it from the laptop.
Having resorted to the old fix I have now assigned the laptop a fixed IP address both on the router and on the laptop to see if that will make any difference.

Once again, my experience exactly matches Flanker's.

Other Vista lappys connect fine when visiting (as did the troublesome one at first), so I suspect that there is something very obscure but not unique that affects SOME Vista laptops.  Maybe a combination of Vista and other software.

I use AVG free antivirus on all my machines and the Windows firewall, but other visiting Vista Lappys have the same and are OK.  The 'duffer' is a cheap ESystem from PC World, the one that works is a DELL Inspiron.  I suspct that it may be related to sleep or hibernation functions.

I have recently changed to MS essentials AV from AVG and the fault has happened with both.
Mine only occurs on boot up and once connected hangs in there, not affected by hibernation.
My "duffer" is a HP and the vista one that does not suffer is an Acer.

Mine usually connects on boot up if it was ok when turned off.  When awoken from sleep (or hibernate), which it seems to do if left for long periods irrespective of the settings, it sometimes has lost it.  Rebooting then does not bring it back and it seems to need a hub reset and sometimes removal of the hub setup in Vista and re-creation of it to get it back.

One thing I have noticed with Ipconfig all, it seems to have an extraordinary number of comms setups, most of which I don't recognise.  How many should there be?

Do you mean the Tunnel connections shown ?
They are part of IPv6 and mine shows tunnel adapters 10,11,6 and 7.

I have just upgraded my "duffer" to windows 7. So my experiment with assigned IP address will not be tested with vista. I will still leave it assigned in windows 7 which should prove laptop and router.
