internet on my mobile

can anyone please help me, my son who lives in the uk bought a sony ericesson k8000mobile phone ,when he got a new phone he passed this one on to me ,i live in ireland and put my irish (vodafone)sim card into it ,but can not get the internet on it ,i have contacted vodafone,and been told it can not be done ??? i have broadband internet with bt on my home computer, , can anyone please HELP ME.

What network was the phone originally on? Was the phone locked to a specific network? What error message are you getting?

thank you for your reply, not sure what network phone was on ,no it is not locked ,
message i am getting is commun ication   failure,contact operator for support,
i have done this and was told my sim card was irish in a uk phone.

my sim card id vodafone.ie   my internet is hotmail.com, supplied by bt,

Which access point (APN) are you using (Settings > Connectivity > Internet)?

To connect to the Internet from a mobile phone, you need to have a valid APN (Access Point Name), plus a username and password.

I suspect you may have the wrong Internet settings on the phone.

I did a quick Google - looks like the vodafone settings are:

APN: isp.vodafone.ie
username: vodafone
Password: vodafone

thank you for your help, i have tried resetting my phone but to no avail , again been told it is an irish sim card in a uk phone, and thy (ireland)do not have the software to cover an uk phone

Resetting the phone wouldn't help. You'd need to make sure that your phone was using the Irish Internet settings, not the UK Internet settings, as you're using an Irish SIM card.

Assuming you're not able to check or change those settings, then I don't think are any other options.

Are you on the correct band?  I'm not sure what Ireland is in relation to the Uk, but if you look on wikipedia or similar you can see if it matches.
