The differences between V1 and V1.5 hubs
May 9th, 2008 at 8:01pm

I bought a V1.5 from a nice lady on ebay for £9.99 to play with. (the hub not the lady)

The plan was to downgrade to Speedtouch 6.1.9.6 via BT 6.2.2.6.

Whereas I have been able to downgraded the V1.5  to 6.2.2.6, the lights do not map correctly.  In fact it was quite a spectacular fireworks display of reds yellows and greens during the downgrade!

Power light doubles up as Data (Ethernet) light, turning from red to orange on connection. The phone light lights up green with Wifi activity.

I have not been able to determine what the other lights do as I dare not connect it in this state to my fragile BT broadband.

However the v1.5 does work OK as a slave on 6.2.2.6 and the wifi works fine if you don't mind funny lights.

Other strange things.

The RESET function on the V1.5 running 6.2.2.6 reverts to the Wireless Association button as on the V1, to be held in for 15 seconds until the relay clicks. The recessed Reset button is not enabled on 6.2.2.6!

Also the BT instructions do not explain how to load even upgrades onto V1.5 hubs, and I have no idea which button to hold in if you need to invoke the Recovery Mode method, but I am now guessing the wireless association button when running 6.2.2.6.

As it's a "kernel" switch I am also guessing it's the wireless association button whatever firmware is loaded.

My attempts to load Speedtouch 6.1.6.9 came to the same sticky end as everyone else. Got almost right through then when the tool asked for a reboot, the v1.5 reboots in the wrong way. The tool wanted a kernel reboot and the hub gave it (presumably) another kind.  As it's embedded in the tool executable I am resigned to it being un-downgradeable to speedtouch 6.1.6.9, and a right mess when downgraded to 6.2.2.6

So I would say that all the new lights and buttons are handled by the firmware 6.2.6.b onwards, and the new hub will not function properly with older firmware, hence the unseemly and ill-advised rush to get out the new firmware in time for the new hubs when they were released, "ready or not".

So it would appear that the 1.5 hub was not just developed for aesthetic reasons but to stop people cracking it for use with other ISP`s.

"Nothing gives you a faster wireless connection than the new BT Home Hub."

Something else - when I change the SSID of a V1 hub to "masterhub", the wireless manager says I'm connected to "masterhub".

When I change the SSID of my V1.5 hub to "slavehub" it usually says connected to "slavehub", but sometimes it says connected to "BTHomehub-72ab(slavehub)" which is very strange in that it sometimes seems to remember it's old SSID.

Still trying to get it to do it again, but it seems to only happen sometimes!  I've deleted all the old profiles from the Vista wireless manager so I don't think it gets it from there.
